IHI manufactures an enormous range of products. From a wide variety of plants, machinery and facilities that support industry and society, to simpler facilities closer to our daily lives, IHI is continuing to broaden this product line-up in all areas of human activity, from the earth to outer space.
Space Development: IHI has participated in the Japanese space development effort from the beginning, developing and producing turbo pumps, a key component of rocket engines, gas-jet systems, both of which are embodiments of IHI’s long-fostered technologies such as cryogenic-pump and turbo machinery. These activities were greatly expanded in space when the company acquired Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.’s Aerospace Division, a pioneer in solid rocket development in Japan. IHI is also playing an important role in development and construction of the Exposed Facilities of Japanese Experiment Module “KIBO”, which is a part of the International Space Station program. Furthermore, in the field of space experiment, IHI is now a supplier of the major experimental systems required for various international cooperative experiments.
Contribution to HIKARI
Propulsion: IHI’s task will be the preliminary analysis of LNG rocket engine. The objectives in this task will be:
- Study the effects on system performance by utilizing LNG rocket engine.
- Conduct Preliminary design of reusable LNG engine / propulsion system which will be compatible with high speed aircraft.
- Conduct Conceptual study of maintenance of reusable LNG engine and propulsion system/subsystems
IHI is being funded by the METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) and other concerned Japanese authorities, in accordance with Japanese laws and regulations.
